Redesign the Okada Experience to Make It Safe and Trackable
Okadas carry millions of Nigerians every day. Most riders have no safety, no insurance, and no way to report a bad actor. Design the fix.
Closes 6 Sept 2026
The brief
Motorcycle taxis (okadas) are the most efficient form of last-mile urban transport in Nigeria. They are also among the most dangerous, with near-zero safety infrastructure, no customer redress, and no accountability when something goes wrong.
Your challenge is to design a safety and accountability system for the okada ecosystem that does not require banning, heavy regulation, or smartphone ownership by riders. It must make riders safer, give passengers a way to report problems, and be adoptable by existing okada unions.
Submit: system design, how riders and passengers interact with it, what technology is required (if any), how trust is built with unions, and how abuse is handled.
Judging criteria: 35% safety impact, 30% feasibility with existing structures, 25% ease of adoption, 10% originality.
