Turn Lagos Plastic Waste into Income for 100 Households
Lagos generates 13,000 tonnes of waste daily. Design a model that turns plastic collection into a reliable income source for low-income households.
Closes 6 Sept 2026
The brief
Informal waste pickers already collect plastic across Lagos — but erratically, at low prices, with no reliability. The system works for nobody: collectors earn too little to depend on it, buyers get inconsistent supply, and most plastic still ends up in the lagoon.
Your challenge is to design a structured plastic waste collection and monetisation model that provides a reliable, dignified income for 100 low-income households in Lagos. The model must be buildable without significant upfront capital and must connect collection to an actual buyer.
Submit: model overview, how households are recruited and retained, collection logistics, buyer identification, income per household per month, and what makes this different from what already exists.
Judging criteria: 35% income reliability for households, 30% operational logic, 25% environmental impact, 10% originality.
