Build the Business Case for Digitising Aba's Garment Manufacturers

Aba is one of the largest garment manufacturing clusters in Africa, yet most producers there are invisible online. Build a business case for a digital marketplace or aggregation model that could connect Aba manufacturers directly to retail buyers across Nigeria and the diaspora.

The brief

Aba, Abia State, produces shoes, bags, clothing and accessories at scale. The manufacturers are real, the quality has improved significantly over the past decade, and there is genuine demand from Nigerians who want to buy locally made goods. The problem is structural: most Aba producers sell to middlemen at low margins, have no direct channel to end customers, and are nearly impossible to find online. Several attempts at Aba-focused e-commerce have struggled. Logistics from Aba to other cities is unreliable. Many manufacturers do not have smartphones capable of running standard seller apps. Quality varies between producers, which makes aggregation risky for any platform that wants to maintain a brand promise. Your task is to write a business case and go-to-market strategy for a model that could change this. This is not a technical brief: you do not need to build software. You need to answer the hard commercial questions. Which product categories are most viable? Who is the first customer segment to target? How does the model handle quality control and returns? What does unit economics look like at small scale? Your deliverable is a 10-15 page business case document or an equivalent slide deck. Good work will include primary research, even if limited, real numbers on Aba production volumes and Nigerian e-commerce logistics costs, and a clear-eyed view of what has failed before and why your proposed model addresses those failures.
