Design a Retail Concept That Takes Ankara Fabric to a Global Customer

Ankara is one of Africa's most recognisable visual exports. Design the retail experience — physical or digital — that brings it to a global audience on African terms.

Closes 6 Sept 2026

The brief

Ankara fabric is produced in Nigeria, worn across West Africa, and sold in markets across the world — often by non-African intermediaries taking the margin. The fabric and the skill exist. The brand, distribution, and customer experience for a global premium market do not. Your challenge is to design a retail concept that positions Ankara fabric and Ankara-made garments as a premium global product — without losing the cultural grounding that makes it meaningful. The concept can be a physical store, an e-commerce experience, a wholesale model, or a combination. Submit: concept overview, target customer profile, visual identity direction, pricing strategy, supply chain from fabric to customer, and how you handle cultural appropriation risk. Judging criteria: 35% commercial viability, 30% cultural integrity, 25% design quality, 10% supply chain thinking.
