Build a Mobile Game That Teaches African History Without Feeling Like School

African history is taught badly, remembered poorly, and almost never the subject of a compelling game. Build the game that changes that.

Closes 6 Sept 2026

The brief

African history — pre-colonial kingdoms, trade routes, wars, philosophy, science — is among the richest in the world and almost entirely absent from popular culture and education. The few games that exist either get the history wrong or present it in a way that feels like a textbook with graphics. Your challenge is to build or prototype a mobile game that makes one aspect of African history genuinely fun to engage with for a player aged 13 to 25. The history must be accurate. The gameplay must be good enough to keep a player engaged past the first five minutes without a teacher telling them to. Submit a working game, a playable demo, or a detailed design document with visual mockups and a gameplay walkthrough video. Include: the historical source material, how accuracy was verified, and why this gameplay mechanic fits this history. Judging criteria: 35% gameplay quality and engagement, 30% historical accuracy, 25% design and production quality, 10% educational integration.
