Design the First Bank Account Millions of Nigerian Teenagers Will Actually Use
Only 28% of Nigerians aged 15–25 have a bank account. It is not because banks have not tried — it is because everything about existing youth accounts is designed for middle-class university students, not the majority.
Closes 10 Sept 2026
The brief
A secondary school student from Kano's Sabon Gari market or a teenage apprentice in Nnewi needs a financial account — to receive payment for work, save safely, and avoid carrying cash. But current "youth accounts" require parental consent documentation, charge fees for low balances, and have interfaces that feel designed for adults. The result is that most Nigerian teenagers interact with money entirely through informal channels.
Your challenge is to design a youth financial account for Nigerians aged 13 to 22 that requires only a school ID or birth certificate to open, charges no fees on balances under ₦50,000, and has a mobile interface specifically designed for teenagers. It must include a built-in financial literacy module that is engaging rather than instructional.
Submit a product design document (max 12 pages) including: the account opening flow, fee structure and economics, the mobile interface design, the financial literacy module design, parental notification versus consent model for under-18s, and a plan to open one million accounts in 12 months through schools and trade associations.
Judging criteria: 35% account design fit for teenagers in informal income, 30% financial literacy module quality, 20% regulatory compliance model, 15% acquisition plan.
