Build the Public Transport App Lagos Commuters Actually Need
Lagos BRT carries 200,000 passengers daily with no real-time information, no seat booking, and no integration with other transport modes. Design the commuter experience that 5 million daily users deserve.
Closes 10 Sept 2026
The brief
Lagos has one of the largest urban populations in the world and some of the worst public transport information infrastructure. The BRT system runs but passengers have no visibility into when buses will arrive, whether routes are operating normally, or how to plan a multi-modal journey. The Uber and Bolt apps have transformed private transport in Lagos. No equivalent exists for public transport.
Your challenge is to design a public transport information and journey planning app for Lagos that integrates BRT, danfo (minibus), and water ferry routes, provides real-time arrival predictions, supports offline route planning, and works on basic Android phones costing under ₦30,000. The app must generate data that LAMATA can use to improve service planning.
Submit a product design document (max 12 pages) including: the real-time data sources for each transport mode, the offline journey planning architecture, the multi-modal routing algorithm, the basic Android optimisation, the LAMATA data sharing model, and a plan to reach 500,000 daily active users within 12 months.
Judging criteria: 35% real-time data accuracy and source design, 30% offline functionality and basic Android optimisation, 20% multi-modal routing, 15% LAMATA data sharing model.
