Design Ethical AI Creative Tools Built for African Creators

Most AI image, music, and writing tools are trained on datasets that massively underrepresent African aesthetics. Design an AI creative tool that actually knows what Nigeria looks like.

Closes 10 Sept 2026

The brief

Generative AI tools are reshaping creative work globally. But when a Nigerian graphic designer asks an AI to generate images of Lagos street life, or a Yoruba-language writer asks for grammar assistance, the results are often inaccurate, stereotyped, or simply wrong. The training data deficit is a structural problem with immediate consequences for African creative professionals trying to use these tools competitively. Your challenge is to design an AI-assisted creative tool — for image generation, music production, writing, or design — that is specifically built and trained to serve Nigerian or West African creative professionals. You must address the training data problem explicitly: where does your African-relevant data come from, and how is it curated ethically? Submit a product design document (max 12 pages) including: the creative task your tool addresses, your dataset sourcing and curation approach, how bias is reduced, the tool's interface design, a plan for ongoing model improvement, and a monetisation model that keeps it accessible to independent Nigerian creatives. Judging criteria: 35% approach to African-relevant training data, 30% product design quality, 20% ethical framework for data sourcing, 15% monetisation model.
