Build the STEM Educational Game Nigerian Secondary Students Will Choose to Play

Nigerian students who play mobile games for 3 hours a day could be learning STEM concepts at the same time. They are not because nobody has built a game that is genuinely fun first and educational second.

The brief

The WAEC and NECO pass rates in Mathematics and the Basic Sciences have been below 50% nationally for over a decade. EdTech companies have built practice apps, video lectures, and quizzes — and most of them are abandoned within a week because they feel like homework. Meanwhile, Nigerian teenagers play mobile games for 3 to 5 hours a day on the same phones these apps could run on. The gap is design, not access. Your challenge is to design a mobile game for Nigerian secondary school students (JSS3 to SS3) that teaches core WAEC Mathematics or Physics concepts through gameplay — not as an add-on, but as the fundamental game mechanic. The game must be engaging enough that players return without being reminded, work within 100MB data per week, and demonstrably improve test scores in a specific topic area. Submit a game design document (max 12 pages) including: the game concept and core mechanic, the specific curriculum topic addressed, how learning is embedded in gameplay (not separate), technical specifications for low-data use, a learning impact measurement design, and a plan to deploy to 100,000 students within 12 months. Judging criteria: 35% quality of gameplay and entertainment value, 30% depth and accuracy of curriculum integration, 20% learning impact measurement design, 15% technical design for low-data environments.
