Help Nigerian Fashion Brands Fight Counterfeiting
Nigerian Ankara and Aso-oke brands are being counterfeited at scale, primarily from cheap imports. Design a verification system that tells buyers whether what they are holding is real.
Closes 10 Sept 2026
The brief
As Nigerian fashion brands like House of Deola, Adire brands, and premium Ankara fabric producers have grown their reputation, so has the volume of counterfeits. Fake versions of premium Nigerian fabric brands are imported from Asia and sold at markets from Balogun to Aba. Buyers have no way to tell the difference. Brand owners have no enforcement tool.
Your challenge is to design an anti-counterfeiting system for Nigerian fashion and textile brands that is cost-effective enough for a brand with ₦50 million annual revenue to implement. It must enable a buyer standing in a market stall to verify authenticity in under 30 seconds using a phone, without requiring an internet connection in the first step.
Submit a system design document (max 10 pages) including: the authentication technology (QR codes, NFC, chemical markers, or hybrid), how the verification works offline, how the brand registers and manages its product database, the cost structure for the brand, how counterfeits are reported and tracked, and a plan to onboard 20 Nigerian fashion brands in the first year.
Judging criteria: 40% reliability and counterfeit-resistance of authentication method, 30% offline usability in market environments, 20% cost feasibility for mid-size brands, 10% brand onboarding plan.
