Monitor and Slow Coastal Erosion in Nigeria's Atlantic Coastline
Nigeria is losing 30 metres of coastline per year in some areas. Design a low-cost monitoring and early warning system that protects coastal communities and informs government policy.

The brief
Over 53 million Nigerians live within 100 kilometres of the coast. In communities like Ondo's coast, parts of Lagos Island, and the Niger Delta, erosion rates have accelerated sharply since 2018. The Nigerian coastline lacks a systematic monitoring network — erosion data is collected ad hoc, rarely shared with affected communities, and almost never triggers coordinated government response.
Your challenge is to design a coastal erosion monitoring system that combines satellite imagery, community-based observation, and inexpensive physical sensors to produce monthly erosion rate data for 500 kilometres of Nigerian coastline. The system must issue early warnings to at-risk communities at least six months before critical erosion events.
Submit a technical design document (max 12 pages) including: the sensor and satellite data combination, community monitoring protocols, early warning criteria and communication method, how data is shared with government, cost per kilometre monitored per year, and a 24-month deployment plan.
Judging criteria: 35% monitoring accuracy and coverage, 30% early warning credibility and community accessibility, 20% cost per kilometre, 15% government data integration.
