The Creative Habit

1 of 6

Creativity is not a talent delivered to a few people at birth. It is a practice — something built through consistency, curiosity, and a willingness to make things that are not very good yet. The writers, designers, and innovators who seem effortlessly creative are almost always people who have produced enormous volumes of work over long periods of time. Most of that work is never seen. What gets seen is the part that survived the practice. This is useful to know because it means creativity is available to you, but only if you show up for it regularly. Waiting to feel inspired before you make something is the same as waiting to feel athletic before you go for a run. The practice comes first. The inspiration follows.
