Serve the Dissatisfied Minority First

1 of 4

Every market has a dissatisfied minority — the people for whom existing solutions are most inadequate. These are not the majority of users. They are the people who complain the loudest, seek the most workarounds, and would be most relieved by a genuinely better solution. Serving this group first is the right entry strategy for most early-stage builders, for two reasons. First, they are easiest to sell to — their pain is acute and their motivation to try something new is high. Second, building a solution that fully satisfies the hardest-to-satisfy customers almost always produces a product that is good enough for everyone else. Do not aim for the mass market from day one. Aim for the most frustrated person in the room.
