Profit Does Not Cancel Purpose

For decades, the assumption was clear: if your mission was social impact, you needed charity. If you wanted to make money, you became a business and left the mission behind. That binary is collapsing. The most powerful organisations being built today operate at the intersection — purpose-driven businesses that generate revenue because their mission creates economic value, and social enterprises that fund their impact through commerce rather than donations. Charging for impact is not a betrayal of mission. In many cases, it is what makes impact sustainable. When a customer pays for a product or service that improves their life, they are not a charity recipient — they are a participant in a value exchange. That dignity and sustainability is something donation-dependency rarely produces.
