When to Seek Help and Where to Find It

There is a version of struggling you can work through by resting more, talking to someone you trust, reducing pressure, and giving yourself time. And there is a version that requires professional support — not because you have failed, but because some things are medical, not motivational. If your low mood has lasted more than two weeks, if you cannot function at school or work, if you are having thoughts of harming yourself, or if you feel like nothing will ever improve — these are signs that what you are experiencing is beyond what self-care and good conversations can fix. Seeking professional help for a mental health condition is the same as going to a doctor for a physical one. The stigma attached to it in Nigeria is real. But stigma is not a reason to leave something treatable untreated.
