Productivity Redefined

1 of 4

The definition of productivity has shifted. For most of the 20th century, productivity meant doing more tasks per unit of time — working faster, managing more, producing more output. In an AI-augmented environment, that definition is obsolete. If AI can produce in five minutes what took you five hours, the five-minute version is now the baseline. Productivity is not about doing more tasks. It is about doing the right tasks — the ones that require your specific human capabilities and that compound toward the outcomes that matter most. The person who uses AI to clear the low-value tasks from their schedule and then invests the recovered time in deep thinking, relationship building, and creative work will compound their advantage. The person who uses AI to do more of the same low-value tasks faster will run faster on the same spot.
