The Peak Need

Self-actualisation is Maslow's term for the drive to realise one's full potential — to become everything one is capable of becoming. It is characterised not by the satisfaction of a deficiency (like hunger or loneliness) but by the desire to grow, create, and fulfil a unique personal purpose. Maslow observed that most people never consistently operate at this level — not because they lack the capacity, but because the lower-level needs in the hierarchy are rarely fully and consistently met. The implication for individuals is clear: the path to self-actualisation runs through the other four levels. You cannot shortcut to purpose and full potential while foundation, safety, belonging, and esteem needs are intermittently unmet. The implication for builders is equally clear: create the conditions at every level, and self-actualisation becomes accessible. Skip any level, and the aspiration floats without a foundation to support it.
