The Gift of Your Presence

1 of 5

At its core, presence is a form of love. When you give someone your full attention, you are saying with your body and your eyes and the quality of your listening: you matter enough to me that I am here, fully, with no part of me elsewhere. In a world where most people are perpetually somewhere else, this is a rare and powerful act. The impact of full presence on other people, especially people who rarely experience it, is difficult to overstate. People feel seen. They feel that what they are saying is worth saying. They feel less alone in whatever they are carrying. And they often feel, sometimes without being able to articulate exactly why, that they have been in the presence of something real. This gift is available to anyone. It does not require status, resources, intelligence, or special ability. It requires only the willingness to be here, now, with this person, and to keep returning to that whenever you drift away. It is the simplest and most radical act of generosity available to any human being. And it costs nothing except the distraction you chose not to follow. The choice to give another person your full presence is a choice that changes how they experience their day, their life, and their sense of whether they matter. Do not underestimate it.
