What Is Your Personal Legend?
1 of 5
In The Alchemist, a young shepherd named Santiago meets an old king called Melchizedek, who tells him something simple but unsettling: every person has a Personal Legend. It is the thing you have always wanted to do, the life you imagined before other people started telling you what was realistic. Melchizedek says the world's greatest lie is this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what happens to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. Santiago discovers the opposite is true. He is the one choosing, every single day, whether to pursue his dream or settle for safety. Coelho also introduces what he calls the Soul of the World, a universal force that conspires to help anyone who is genuinely pursuing their Personal Legend. The universe, he suggests, is not indifferent. It responds to people who commit. The shepherd sells his flock and leaves everything familiar behind. He does not wait until he is ready. He simply decides.
