Wanting What Actually Matters

1 of 4

The final and most important question in Parrish's framework is the one most people never explicitly ask: what do you actually want? Not what society tells you to want. Not what looks impressive. Not what you told yourself five years ago that you wanted. What do you actually want now, from this life, with the time you have? Parrish uses the Dickens process — imagining yourself at 80 looking back — to surface the gap between what people are optimising for and what they will actually care about when the performance pressure is gone. Clear thinking applied to the wrong goal produces a well-executed mistake. Before getting better at deciding, it is worth being honest about what you are deciding toward.
