Marriage: What It Actually Asks of You

Genesis 2:18 says: it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him. The word helper carries no subordination of dignity — it is used elsewhere in Scripture to describe God himself. Marriage, as Barbara Hughes writes, is not the completion of your identity. It is the call to pour yourself into a specific life shared with another person. The discipline of marriage is the daily decision to keep choosing your spouse above yourself.
