Your Ceiling Is Your Leadership

1 of 6

There is a principle in leadership that acts like a physical law: your organisation cannot outgrow your leadership. If you lead at a level of three out of ten, the most your team can achieve is a three — no matter how talented the individuals are. This is called the Law of the Lid. Leadership ability determines effectiveness. The person at the top sets the ceiling for everything below them. A brilliant team led poorly produces mediocre results. A capable team led well can exceed what anyone thought possible. The implication is uncomfortable but clarifying: if your organisation is underperforming, the first place to look is not the team. It is yourself.
