Influence Is Everything

The most important insight about leadership is also the simplest: leadership is influence. Nothing more, nothing less. When you have genuine influence over people, they follow you because they choose to — because they trust your direction, they believe in what you are building, and they want to be part of it. When you have only authority, people follow you because they have to — and they stop the moment the authority disappears. Authority comes from a title, a position, a role. Influence is built over time through character, competence, and connection. You can have authority and no influence. You can have influence and no formal authority. Only one of those actually leads.
