An architect draws before a single brick is laid. A nonprofit leader needs to do the same thing. Your building plan answers questions like: what programmes will you run and for whom? How will you fund them? What roles do you need filled, and in what order? What does success look like at 1 year, 3 years, and 5 years? Most organisations do not ask these questions until a crisis forces them to. By then, the cost of not having answers is already showing up in team confusion, donor frustration, and programmes that drift from the original purpose. Planning is not bureaucracy — it is the infrastructure that makes everything else possible.
