Your Rights Online
1 of 6
Your digital life is governed by law. The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 — one of the most important pieces of legislation passed in recent years — establishes that your personal data has legal protection. Organisations that collect your data must tell you what they are collecting and why, must not use it for purposes other than what they disclosed, and must keep it secure. The Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 criminalises a range of online conduct — including cyberstalking, hacking, and sending abusive messages through electronic means. This cuts both ways: it protects you from online harassment and makes you criminally liable for certain online actions you might not have thought twice about. What you do online has legal consequences, and what others do to you online may be actionable.
