The Competition Trap
1 of 6
We are taught that competition is healthy — that it pushes everyone to do better. And for society overall, that is often true. But for individual companies and careers, competition can be a trap that consumes energy and produces nothing. When two companies compete intensely, they spend most of their time and resources fighting each other rather than building something new. They watch each other constantly, react to each other's moves, and end up becoming more similar over time — not more differentiated. The founders who build great companies are not usually the ones who outcompeted others in an existing space. They are the ones who found or created a space where they did not have to compete — at least not at first.
