Build on the Right Foundation

1 of 6

The decisions made at the very beginning of a company are disproportionately important. Who you bring in as a co-founder. How you structure ownership. What you decide the company is fundamentally for. These early choices create patterns that persist — and are extraordinarily difficult to undo once the company has grown. A co-founder conflict at year three that is rooted in an ambiguity from day one will not resolve cleanly. A culture of mediocrity established in the early hires will become the culture. An ownership structure that seemed fair when you were two people in a room will create dysfunction when you are twenty. Getting the foundation right is not exciting. But it is the work that determines whether everything else can stand.
