When You Are Still Not Heard

1 of 3

You can do everything right. Good timing, calm tone, clear structure, real vulnerability. And still not be heard. Some people are not in a place to receive what you are offering, no matter how well you offer it. Some people have their own walls, their own defended places, their own reasons for not being able to hear this particular thing from this particular person at this particular time. When this happens, there is a temptation to try again, louder or sharper or with more evidence. This almost never works. When someone has become defensive, adding more content to the conversation does not open them. It closes them further. The most useful thing in this moment is often to name what is happening without pressure: 'I can see this is not landing the way I meant it. Can we come back to it later?' This preserves the relationship and leaves the door open. There is also a harder truth: some people will not hear you, not because you said it wrong, but because hearing you would require them to change something they are not ready to change. You cannot make someone hear what they are not ready for. Your job is to say the true thing as well as you can. Their job is to receive it. You can only do your part.
