The Sleep You Are Not Getting

1 of 6

Sleep is not a passive state. While you are asleep, your brain is doing some of its most important work: consolidating memories, clearing waste products that accumulate during waking hours, regulating mood, processing emotional experiences from the day, and restoring the energy needed for everything that follows. Teenagers and young adults need 8 to 10 hours per night. Most are getting far less. The consequences are not just tiredness: reduced ability to learn and retain information, increased irritability and emotional reactivity, weaker decision-making, and over time, increased vulnerability to anxiety and depression. Staying up until 2am watching content is not a personality trait. It is a health decision.
