The Two Kinds of Work

1 of 6

Not all work is equal. The most valuable kind — the kind that builds your future — requires you to think hard, hold complex ideas in your head, and stay focused for extended periods. Call this deep work. Then there is the other kind: emails, messages, admin tasks, logistics. This feels productive because it is constantly moving. But it rarely moves you forward. The problem is that most people spend most of their time in the shallow category and wonder why they are not making progress. Deep work is uncomfortable because it does not give you instant feedback. Shallow work rewards you constantly — with replies, ticks, and the feeling of movement. The thing that feels most productive is almost never the thing that matters most.
