Your Vote and Your Voice

Every Nigerian citizen aged 18 and above has the right to vote. To exercise that right, you must be registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). INEC conducts all federal and state elections. Local government elections are run separately by each state's State Independent Electoral Commission, or SIEC. To vote, you need a Permanent Voter Card (PVC). Registration is free. When you register, INEC assigns you to a specific polling unit. Since 2023, elections use the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), a device that verifies your identity using your fingerprint or facial recognition before accrediting you to vote. BVAS was introduced to reduce electoral fraud. It means your vote is tied to your biometric identity. A stolen PVC or a ballot stuffed before polling begins cannot pass accreditation without the real voter present.
