Your Constitutional Rights in Nigeria
1 of 6
The Nigerian Constitution guarantees specific rights to every citizen. The most important for daily life include: the right to life (Section 33), the right to dignity of the human person — which prohibits torture, inhuman, or degrading treatment (Section 34), the right to personal liberty — which limits how long you can be detained without charge (Section 35), the right to a fair hearing (Section 36), the right to private and family life (Section 37), the right to freedom of expression and the press (Section 39), the right to peaceful assembly and association (Section 40), and the right to freedom from discrimination (Section 42). These are not suggestions. They are enforceable legal protections, and any law that is inconsistent with them is void to the extent of its inconsistency.
