How to Access Justice

1 of 6

Knowing your rights is the first step. Accessing the system that enforces them is the second — and often the harder one. The Nigerian legal system operates through a hierarchy of courts: Magistrate Courts for less serious matters, State High Courts and the Federal High Court for more significant civil and criminal cases, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court at the apex. For most people, the most practical entry points are: the police (for criminal complaints), the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for rights violations, the FCCPC for consumer complaints, regulatory bodies like the NCC for telecoms issues, and civil society organisations that provide free legal assistance. The Legal Aid Council of Nigeria provides free legal representation to those who cannot afford a lawyer in criminal proceedings.
