How Algorithms Shape What You See
1 of 6
Every platform that shows you a feed uses an algorithm to decide what you see. That algorithm does not try to show you accurate information, a balanced view of the world, or the most important news. It tries to keep you on the platform as long as possible, because that is how the platform makes money. The way it does that is by showing you content that triggers a strong feeling: agreement, outrage, excitement, or fear. Content that confirms what you already believe performs well because it keeps you engaged without friction. Over time, the algorithm learns exactly what you respond to and shows you more of it. The result is that you see a narrower and narrower version of the world, one that mostly agrees with you already.
